A Quote from "Atlas Shrugged"

I've been working my way through Atlas Shrugged, by Ayn Rand, for nearly the last year. I made the decision to read it back in March of 2009, after attending a Tea Party in my hometown. I had been hearing people make reference to the book for some time before that, but the Tea Party clinched it. It has taken so long because the content is so pithy that I have to pace myself to be able to absorb it all. And let's be honest, also because cross-referencing the events in the book with current events in real life has proved scary--so much so that I can only take small amounts at a time. But I'm within 90 or so pages of finishing it now, and hope to make it by the one-year mark (there are 1084 pages total in the book). So here's a quote from the book's most famous character:

The only proper purpose of a government is to protect man's rights, which means:  to protect him from physical violence. A proper government is only a policeman, acting as an agent of man's self-defence, and, as such, may resort to force only against those who start the use of force. The only proper functions of a government are:  the police, to protect you from criminals; the army, to protect you from foreign invaders; and the courts, to protect your property and contracts from breach or fraud by others, to settle disputes by rational rules, according to objective law. But a government that initiates the employment of force against men who had forced no one, the employment of armed compulsion against disarmed victims, is a nightmare infernal machine designed to annihilate morality; such a government reverses its only moral purpose and switches from the role of protector to the role of man's deadliest enemy, from the role of policeman to the role of a criminal vested with the right to the wielding of violence against victims deprived of the right of self-defense. Such a government substitutes for morality the following rule of social conduct: you may do whatever you please to your neighbor, provided your gang is bigger than his.     ~John Galt

It's a good start...

Scott Brown's win in Massachusetts is a really good start and an encouragement to conservatives everywhere, but let's not sit and rest on our laurels. It's still only a "start" and there's much work to do. The tendency (for me as much as for anyone else) is to think of Brown as the beginning of the end of socialism in America, and raise him up to a standard that he, or any other person, would be hard pressed to meet. Let's remember that Brown is just a man--hopefully a really GOOD man, but a man nonetheless, and subject to all the limitations to which any other man is subject. He can't change Washington all on his own, even if he does break the filibuster-proof majority in the Senate. He needs our continued support, and he needs us to seat more conservatives in the midterm elections. He also needs us to keep him accountable to the promises and ideals he stood for in his campaign. Let's get to it, folks!

Michelle Bachmann on Barney Frank's New Bill

There is so much information in this video about what's going on in Washington right now that I can't do it justice by trying to describe it. Please watch the whole thing (it's about a half hour, but worth it) and take action against the trend that is being established by the Obama administration. We are losing freedoms right and left and aren't even being told the half of it by the supposed watchdogs of government, the mainstream media.

Lindzen, a professor of meteorology at that backwater of science, MIT, weighs in and exposes himself to ridicule with common-sense analysis of the evidence concerning anthropogenic global warming in this article in that supermarket tabloid known as the Wall Street Journal. I know, it's a bit long for a mainstream media headline, but if they were allowed that much space, I can see it...

Dramatic Portrayal of Unemployment Trend

A friend of mine on Facebook linked to this multimedia portrayal of the unemployment statistics for the US since January of 2007. Notice how it gets much more "interesting" in the last few months, starting in about November of last year...Hmmm, wonder what happened then to make things pick up like that? Oh, wait, I know...

Especially on my heart this day are the families of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom, in particular those who died last week in Fort Hood, Texas. "Global Warming" will be our downfall--just not in the way they think...

Lord Christopher Monckton, a noted skeptic of global warming, or climate change, or whatever they are calling it these days, issued a dire warning to the US a couple of days ago in St. Paul, MN. Please watch this video and know that this WILL come if we don't do something to stop it.
